Meadowbrook Schwarzbier: 24 IBU that drinks like smoke
Meadowbrook Schwarzbier landed Thursday afternoon — eight cases, 4.9% ABV, 24 IBU on the spec sheet. Those numbers suggest a gentle ride. They're lying.
Pour it and you get cola-dark clarity, tan head that stays put for two minutes. Aroma hits with toasted bread crust, faint chocolate, and something that reads like distant woodsmoke even though there's no smoke malt listed anywhere on the brewer's notes.
Tasting notes
First sip: clean lager fermentation, light body, then roasted malt floods in — espresso without bitterness, burnt toast edges, hint of licorice root on the back end. The 24 IBU barely registers as hops; it's all about malt structure and that phantom smoke character that keeps appearing every third sip.
Mouthfeel is leaner than a porter, smoother than most schwarzbiers we've stocked. Carbonation sits medium-high, scrubs the palate between sips, makes you want to go back in.
Finish is dry, lightly ashy, with a cocoa powder ghost that lingers for thirty seconds. If you told me this was 32 IBU I'd believe you based on the roast alone, but the bitterness genuinely reads low.
Shelf placement
We've got it in cooler three, bottom row, next to the Tallgrass Helles for contrast. Opposites in color, similar in drinkability.
Mitch wants to pair it with the smoked cheddar we don't carry. I told him the IBU-to-smoke ratio doesn't support that move. He disagreed using no numbers.
